Are you a Pop-UU?

March 29, 2007 · 14 Comments

Building off a mini-conversation that somewhat kicked off with my Am I Too Stupid To Be A UU? and added on by Mom to the Left’s A poplar culture UU?, I’m curious to know how many other UU bloggers out there who are one of us :-D

So…do you feel too stupid to be a UU?

Do you watch Survivor?  American Idol?

Do you root with Jerry Springer or love the Maury paternity test shows? [I'm a thousand percent sure I do!]

Have you read less than 2 of the books/authors you hear regularly mentioned as being essential to UUism or mentioned in a sermon?

Would you rather watch prime time than go to an art gallery opening?

Then maybe you are a Pop-UU too.  I don’t quite know what that means yet, but, alas, let’s get a conversation started!  If you think of yourself as a Pop-UU, leave a note in the comments!  I want to add y’all to that links category over on my right hand bar, so we know who else we can commiserate with!

It’s time to come out, because we get lost underneath the deep theological debates.  There are plenty more of us out there [who don't blog] and they might find comfort in knowing that others share their insecurities…and love of relatiy TV.

I know I do.

/stands up and blurts out: “I watch I LOVE NY and America’s Next Top Model!”

I think I fall somewhere in the middle. I don’t read books on theology, but I do prefer an art gallery opening to primetime (considering I don’t own a tv, that’s not surprising).

I avoid American Idol on principle . It is a vapid attempt at entertainment. Great ratings (I assume) , but ordinary in the extreme. :)

I’m sort of an elder-pop, I guess. I watch America’s Funniest Home Videos and That 70’s show (and, of course, The Colbert Report) and I love Rachael Ray! But I do read the heavy books because sometimes I have to preach on them. However, this Sunday’s service is about humor, since it’s April Fool’s Day (never mind that it’s also Palm Sunday—skip that part), so I’ve been boning up on my UU jokes.

I guess I’m a conglomerate of Pop and nonPop.

I suppose I’m a high-brow UU who’s all in favor of pop UU. (I love “American Idol,” but I’m too busy to watch it. These days, I have time to download “The Daily Show” but never get around to watching it.) True to type, the last movie I saw was this one, which really doesn’t qualify for pop-UU. I do highly recommend it, especially if you’re too busy to go on a retreat but could really use one.

Philo – we down here in the masses need allies up there on top :-D

mskitty – I dont know the world revolved without Rachel Ray. I would go straight for her.

Hey, Kinsi, your post reminded me of a situation in an RE class I was teaching last Sunday. I’ll post about it today on my blog. It goes right along with the whole pop-UU angst.

If you think of yourself as a Pop-UU, leave a note in the comments!

does this mean that if we do NOT consider ourselves to be Pop-UUs, then we are not welcome to comment? just askin’ –

Sorry for chiming in so late. I lost my jobs last month and have been in job hunt mode until I got a job and then have been in new job mode. Things are just now returning to a routine.

Anyway, I admit to being a Pop-UU to some extent.

Now, I do read a lot of religious and spirtitual books, and some pretty deep ones. I just plain read a lot. I have been doing self-study of Christian origins and other such topics for years. I blame Elaine Pagels for turning me into a Unitarian. Also, I watch a lot of foreign films. Some of this may move me more toward the uppity UU crowd. I never feel I am too stupid to be a UU.

BUT… I am a Pop-Culture junkie. I am a Gen-Xer raised on television and popular music. I can tolerate a little classical or jazz, but I would rather hear some latin pop like Paulina Rubio or Shakira, or hear some old school heavy metal than anything cultured. 8-)

While I am not into American Idol, I am a bit of reality show junkie. I have my own particular tastes, but I never miss The Amazing Race or Beauty and the Geek. I love Little People Big World and Gay Straight or Taken, too.

The TV is almost always on (or a DVD in) in our house. I can never watch too much Family Guy, King of Queens, or Seinfeld. Even when we are reading, the TV is on. 8-) The thing that is great about Family Guy is that most of the humor is just pop-culture references, which I love. I watch all the I Love the 70s/80s/90s shows and Behind the Music shows. Useless pop trivia is my strong point. That, software development, and theology. Go figure.
