My new Valentine’s Day Ritual

February 14, 2007 · Leave a Comment

So today is Valentine’s Day.   Huzzah for being single.  But I’ve decided to start my own ritual.

This morning I watched the movie Southern Comfort – a movie about transgendered folk and transgendered love and intimacy.  It was incredible.

So I’ve decided that every year I am going to watch a movie or two about different kinds of love, and love that many see as wrong or love that people would like to forbid.

Something to remind me that love is under attack and that love, any kind of love, is praiseworthy.

Movie Binge – Purge # 2

January 27, 2007 · Leave a Comment

So apparently the movie review thing is a good idea, here’s the latest installment, now with a rating system -

The Verdicts (from worst to best)

-Waste of Time
-Eh, not really worth it
-Worth renting
-Going to watch it again
-Will own it some day

Big Eden – I re-rented this movie after falling in love with it years ago. I wish I could live in this town. Its a small town in Montana where its perfectly accepted to be gay, and even the old widow will try and hook you up with a nice young man. It’s a town that lives up to his name. It’s got a great cast, and I really liked the small town feel of the movie. Its partly a story about finally being true to yourself, but this is also highly recommended for a nice fluffy feel good story. Verdict: Will Own It Someday

Garden State – Ok, so the first time watching this wasn’t all that great. It was definitely offbeat, which I like, but it was a little bit too plotless for me. I might watch it again on the recommendation that it takes it two times seeing it before you start to like it. Everyone is apparently over the moon about the Soundtrack, but I was so so on it. I might watch it again, depending if the next set of movies doesn’t come until tomorrow. Little Miss Sunshine was by far better. UPDATE – Tried it again. Didn’t make it through. Verdict: Eh, not really worth it.

Dorian Blues - WONDERFUL! Great coming out story. I liked it. Not good enough to make part of my library, but definitely good enough to watch again. Well acted – I really liked the main actor and the character he played. The brother was pretty darn good too. This is a coming of age / coming out flick about a gay son who’s a HS Sr. – College Freshman in the movie vs. the somewhat evil dad. Verdict: Going to watch it again!

Nine Dead Gay Guys - This is a personal pleasure – I love this movie. And so does a straight male friend. It’s slightly, uh, non-highbrow humor, but I love it. A nice movie to watch after a looooong day. Ludicrous humor. I laugh whenever I see it, and I’ll never look at redbull again. And often does “The Queen” get murdered by “A Class Five Offensive Weapon” otherwise known as a caddle prod? Verdict: Will Own It Someday

Movie Binge

January 23, 2007 · 5 Comments

My sister works for Blockbuster and conned me into doing the 2 week free trial of Blockbuster Online.  Apparently its just like netflix, but you can also return the movie to the store and get a free immediate rental while the next movie in the queue is in the process of arriving.

So I’m going for a new gay movie fest.   I had one of these a few years ago with my old roomie in our first apartment – we indulged on like 10 gay themed movies in the week before classes started up.  It was a blast.

So far I’ve seen these movies, and here are my reviews -

Latter Days – I’ve been wanting to see this movie for flippin ever and was finally able to get it.  It’s un-fucking-believable.  Anyone wanting to see a gay themed movie meet conservative religion must see this movie.  I cried like a baby at several points during, and laughed my ass in others.  A movie I will definitely own.  Find and rent/buy this movie.

Mambo Italiano – This movie is hysterical.  I think I watched in 4 times before I shipped it off.  Its in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding style, only its Italian, and there are gay characters in it.  It’s another one I plan on owning some day.  Just flat out funny.  Go see this movie too.

Defying Gravity – This was probably a student flick.  The acting sucked, but the plot did draw me in after the first hour.  A story of a closeted guy in a frat, probably at U SoCal, getting it on with a fratmate.  But the fratmate wants to come out, the guy refuses, and the fratmate ends up getting gay bashed, which leads the guy to start to finally think about who he was.  We don’t hear any of that, we just watch him being quiet in different situations.  A coming out movie.  If it wasn’t free I would have been annoyed – it was no where near as good as the other two.

I returned those three and while I wait for the new ones I got -

The Devil Wears Prada – I love this movie.  I loved it in the theater and I loved it watching it again.  I could somewhat relate to the evil boss, and the fashion stuff made my gay parts satisfied.

I just got done watching Little Miss Sunshine and I can’t stop giggling.  This is somewhat bizarre, but a fantastically funny movie.  Definitely worth seeing.  Hehehe.  I’ll never think of “Superfreak” again!

I’ve got Garden State and Big Eden left to watch, but no matter how much I want to I need to get to bed!  I woke up at 12:10 this afternoon, which left me a frantic 20 minutes to eat and get ready for work.  Yikes!

And I did my taxes tonight – I’m getting a fair bit back.  yay!  New tires here I come!

I had to have a tow truck to leave the weigh in. Does that make me fat?

January 20, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Or does that make my car crappy.  My vote is the latter…battery died while in the WW meeting.  I was worried it was the starter…the battery only set me back 60 dollars as opposed to a way to expensive starter.

But the weigh in itself was good.  Lost another 4.8 for a total of 18.4 since Dec. 30th.  WooWoo.

After the weigh in and car debacle and a quick lunch I went to go see Memories of a Geisha.  Good movie.  I left the movie with an odd sensation…a very peaceful sensation and I wanted to be more graceful like a Geisha.  Very odd.  The exact ending was horribly predictable…and the whole bidding on who gets to pop the cherry thing was just a tad beyond creepy, but good movie.  It was worth the price…which is something you can’t say about every movie.

Speaking of movies, my mom told me Brokeback Mountain opened in Columbus, where I grew up.  And she wants to go see it.  That blew me away.  This, from the conservative slightly homophobic mom who had this teary confrontation with me when she found a picture of a naked fireman on my computer.  Now I’m glad it wasn’t a picture of a naked cowboy.  I saw the movie a couple of weeks ago…it wasn’t all that and a bag of chips like others thought…but it was good.

Now back to fixing typos on the first half of 41 Sunflowers (my novel in progress, which I’m sure you will find out more about later.)
