I can still be Unitarian and love facebook, starbucks, and birthday princesses

I can still be Unitarian and love facebook, starbucks, and birthday princesses – a minor critique of UU world cover article “Home grown Unitarian Universalism” by William Doherty
-or-
I can be a consumer and still have a soul

I finally had time to read this spring’s UU world Saturday night, on a flight from Dallas back home to Atlanta, another semi-monthly business trip. It was a pretty hectic trip as usual, although most of my thoughts were on the mess of a schedule that was waiting for me at the arrival gate. I finished up Runaway Jury for about the tenth time, and then saw the magazine waiting in my laptop bag. The cover article looked interesting, so after I read through some of the other articles (skimming over the just war article – I’m all sorts of peaced out for a while.) The writer, William Doherty, had good ideas near the end of the article and is right about a fair amount of points (and I appreciate that), but the article starts off with a premise I have issues with, and in fact, I think is telling of one of the biggest challenges Unitarians face: bringing our sometimes elitist faith into the 21st century.

“These three interrelated social pathologies of contemporary middle-class life – consumerism, time famine, and civic disengagements – are a real life curriculum, or anti-life curriculum, for our children. If we don’t find a way to counteract this curriculum, we will end up with feel-good faith formation that looks and sounds fine but lacks power and depth.”

By trying to remove your kids from pop culture and mainstream society, you will set their faith up for failure. The challenge of my generation, the “millenials” who are constantly busy and have been since we were born, is maintaining, no, adapting, our faith to fit our lifestyle. If we are taught that having deep Unitarian faith is only possible when we unplug from society and retreat back into the woods, then aside from feeling Unitarian guilt our faith will gradually disappear. We should be showing and teaching our children how to apply UUism to everyday life, and show them how they can see spirituality in the everyday – If our kids can see how they can find spirituality in Dance Dance Revolution, then our kids will grow up to maintain their faith as adults.

We can’t pretend we live in a world without pop culture and the evil “c” word of consumerism. I don’t think we can even try to set up our own little protective elitist bubble – no child wants to be the boy in the bubble. And even if we could – we shouldn’t.

One of the issues that faces our faith is what happens after someone walks into our church for the first time and bangs up against our elitism. And if you doubt UU elitism, this quote from the front-page article of our quarterly religious publication should quell some doubts – “Our me-first, materialistic, consumer culture.”

When we start our ritual criticism American society and consumerism, people, new and old alike, start to question what we’re all about. What’s the soul of Unitarian Universalsm? Is it rebellion against modern society? Is it anti-consumerism? Is it condemning our neighbor for having too many iPods? Is it peace at all costs? Is it some special interest or another?

Or is it love.

I’d rather be surrounded by the latter

And one final point:

“I’ve been working with parents to blow the whistle on one prominent example of consumer culture invading childhood: out-of-control children’s birthday parties…the frantic culture of busyness among adults and children also threatens the values of our tradition celebrates.”

That’s right, Ava (my niece), your Barbie blow out birthday is hereby banned. It doesn’t fit with my faith. On your upcoming sixth birthday, I think it would be better if we meditated on the meaning of cake. Let our chalice be your cake, and hey, it’s even got a candle!

Dumbledore’s Gay Part 2

October 20, 2007 · 4 Comments

So for those who don’t know, I work at an education center, and one of the kids brought this up today.  She was worried because he was harry’s role model.
I was incredulous.

So I’m gay but not out at work (conservative area…don’t want to deal with the drama).  I spoke up this time though.  “What?  Does this make him any less of a role model for Harry”

“Well….no…”

If anything, maybe this’ll help.  I know first hand there are parents who won’t let their children read Harry Potter because of the devil worshiping soundbite (some of the kids at work have told me such…and with the paranoia around Halloween (some of my kids are worried for me because I decorated for Halloween, and that I “believe in it”)  this will get her more flack and more calls to have the book banned in school.

But, it’s not like it’s really clear in the books.  Dumbledore doesn’t hit on Harry, for example.  I thought Lupin was gay until Tonks entered the picture, and I still think Dean and Seamus have a thing going, but in the long run it shouldn’t add to the whole banning picture.  I think it would have to be more explicit that that.

I’ve already started buying my Halloween costume (I’m going to be Harry…it’s work appropriate) but now I’m wishing I had gone for my other idea and been Dumbledore.

America’s Got Talent – Wednesday, 7/11 – Uh, what?!?

July 11, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Boy shakira got through?!?!?  Are they INSANE?  Jesus christ.  I’m in shock.

So my favorites (of right now and in no particular order) -

The big family band from Branson,

Butterscotch the Beatboxer…with a really great voice,

The magic act that got through,

The guys on stilts (only because they’re cute and are coming off kinda gay),

The Bollywood Dancer is kinda intriguing – It’s just…offbeat.  I can’t see him headlining anywhere and I’m getting the feeling he’s there partly on token status, but it’s different and interesting.  It all depends on what the definition of entertainment is.

America’s Got Talent

July 10, 2007 · 1 Comment

I love America’s Got Talent.  Love it love it love it.  Maybe even more than American Idol.

So I can’t belive Boy Shakira got through!  This little man needs to go!  He’s AGT’s Sanjaya…without the hair (good wig), but with a lot more personality.  The Action Hero man was pretty scary…when he took a head dive and in the replay you saw how he had to have been unconscious before he flipped over on his head.  That was kinda scary.

My early favorites are Butterscotch the beatboxing gal – I loved when she used the piano tonight!  I really liked the two magic acts as well.  Any favorite acts out there?

Dear American Idol,

I watched.  I voted.  I blogged. I have to watch y’all on Tivo because I work until 9:30-9:45 and y’all don’t replay it later on the evening.  I’ve been loyal this season, even talking it up to my friends.  Alas, you decide to royally screw me and every other person who had to tivo it by running late.  Way late.  We got to miss the entire ending where you announce the next American Idol and they sing their song.  We were instead treated with ending in the middle of a commercial.  Why bother cutting one of those stupid Golden Idol awards when you can just run epic late and piss off a large percentage of your viewing audience.
I will most definitely not be going to the Idols tour and not buying any of the mp3s of my fav. songs.

Thanks a lot for capping a crappy day with a crappy ending.

Kinsi’s American Idol Recap – Finale

May 22, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Well its time.  Time for the last AI recap for season six – well, the last from here, not like these were very regular.

I still love Blake and want him to win – I thought his performance of the Bon Jovi song was awesome and the best of the night.  You just don’t expect to see that on Idol, which is why I loved it. He’s puuuurrrrdy.

Jordin, however, blew him away in the other two songs, including the eventual single, which sucked.  And it was definitely a belt it out ballad – not Blake’s style, and that I think severely hurt him.  I don’t think its the only thing that cost him the competition, but its up there on the list-o-reasons.  So I’m pretty sure Jordin will win this and will have probably a fantastic career and sell oodles of records.  Blake, I think, develop more of a cult following and not as much airtime, ala 311.

Blake Lewis is My American Idol

May 9, 2007 · Leave a Comment

While my boss is doing his best to kill me before giving me the promised promotion, I neglected to either watch Idol or to catch them on youube.  Lakisha’s gone apparently, good riddance.  She rocked week 1 but hasn’t truely shined since then.

I’ve also decided that Blake Lewis is my American Idol – It only took until 3 to go for me to decide on my favorite this season – the final three are all really good, but I’m going for Blake because a) he’s interesting, b) he’s hot, c) he might be gay or a unitarian, and just the possibility of such is enough!  Since he will probably get voted off next week, I shall be doing my best to vote for him.

Just call me a Blaker Girl.

Kinsi’s American Idol Recap – Bon Jovi

May 2, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Well after a long day at work and a nice mango martini (those mixers in the wave bottles rock!) here is Kinsi’s American Idol Recap for May Day with Bon Jovi songs and the idol himself giving tips.

1. Blake Lewis – You Give Love a Bad Name (The Blake Mix) – Ok.  Wow!  So I wasn’t sure about it at first since I really loathe beatboxing, but man!  You rocked!  That was so…un-American Idol like.  It’s the performance everyones going to be talking about tomorrow.  The miming record thing at the beginning was a little much, thank you, but wow!  Thats one I wouldn’t mind seeing again.  And you looked f’n hot!

2. Melinda Doolittle – Have a Nice Day – You shocked the hell out of me tonight!  I didn’t think you’d be that great on Rock week, but you kicked some ass and took some names.  You showed why you were a professional tonight – you were able to change yourself to the genre, while still making the song your own.  Fantastic.

3. Chris Richardson – Dead or Alive – I do love you.  And I thought you sang great, much better than I was expecting.  I thought you were on tonight, which sadly, being one of my favorites probably isn’t going to make you last past this week.  But you went out in style.  Best vocal I’ve heard from you.

4. Lakisha -This ain’t a love song- Ok, the first half sucked, but the second half blew me away!  Thats why I like you so much – when you get all ow on the register and all sassy you really shine.  Great second half.  You’ve got attitude in that soulful voice, and you gotta show it more often.  Well…since this is most likely your last week, show it on the CD.  If you had gone after Melinda, you might be back for next week, but Melinda blew you out of the water.

5. Phil -Blaze of Glory – I’m surprised I had you dropping this far, because you sang really well.  I just don’t like you.  Eh, sorry.  You’ll probably be back again, but you sang the song really well.  No complaints, since you can’t really change the way you look.  If you had been the last guy, you would have ranked higher.  But Blake’s experiment really blew everyone away….and you got lost in the explosion.

6.   Jordin Sparks – Livin’ On a Prayer – You blew it babe.  You just sucked tonight, and are in danger of being voted off, unbelievably enough.  At this stage in the game, one horrible night might just kick you off the show.

Ok – so this week is really damn tough to predict who is going home since TWO are leaving and they’;re combining votes from the two weeks.  Jordin – you deserve it after tonight’s performance but your last week will carry you through.  The bottom three will be Phil, Chris and Lakisha with Chris and Lakisha going home…although they don’t deserve it, but at this stage in the game good people gotta go.
